Spanish (AS and A2)
Entry requirements : 5 GCSE grades at A*-C, including GCSE English and Spanish.
Course aims
The aim of the course is to develop the ability to use Spanish actively to express ideas and opinions in discussion and in writing as well as for practical communication. It also encourages an interest in all aspects of Spanish/Latin American culture and attitudes.

Course content
Competence is developed in the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. This is done through the study of current and cultural themes and topics relevant to young adults, e.g. Media(Television, Advertising, Communication Technology); Popular Culture (Cinema, Music, Fashion Trends); Health Living/Lifestyle (Sport/exercise, Health and wellbeing, Holidays); Family/Relationships (Relationships within the family, friendships, marriage/partnerships).
Assessment is by examination (AQA Syllabus)
Unit 1- Listening. Reading. Writing
Unit 2 - Speaking
Commitment
A one year course of five timetabled lessons per week. In addition, there is a further one or two lessons arranged in the student's own study time. These are used for individual and group conversation practice with a Spanish assistant and for listening to tapes and watching video material in Spanish.
To follow an AS Level language course successfully students must be willing to spend the necessary time to develop all their skills. Regular homework is given and students will be expected to complete a wide variety of tasks, such as research and preparation for and follow-up for topic work, using a variety of authentic sources including the internet, and writing short articles, summaries and essays on current events.

A2
Entry requirements: Students should have successfully completed the Spanish AS course. They are allowed to bank their AS result against A level results in individual papers and also to re-sit all units once.

Course aims: The course promotes understanding and study in greater detail of contemporary society, cultural background, literature and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied. Spanish will be used to analyse, hypothesise, evaluate, justify and develop arguments and present viewpoints in both speech and writing.

Course content: Reading and listening material is firmly rooted in the culture of the Spanish speaking world. Topics covered include Environment (Pollution, Energy, Protecting the planet).  The Multicultural Society (Immigration, Integration, Racism), Contemporary Social Issues (Wealth and Poverty, Law and Order, Impact of Scientific and Technological progress). 
Two Cultural topics from a choice of; a Spanish language speaking region/community; period of 20th century history; a novelist from a Spanish speaking country; a dramatist; a poet/director/producer from a Spanish speaking country.

Assessment is by examination (AQA Syllabus)

1.       Oral. (15mins)                                               
2.       Listening, Reading and Writing                                                        
3.       Culture and Speaking

EXCELLENT 2011 GCSE RESULTS

We have returned to celebrate yet another successful set of exam results with 85% of our girls at KS4 achieving 5 or more A*-C grades, exceeding all targets set.
