General RE (NOCN Level 1 and 2)

The course offers a variety of opportunities. Postgraduates have worked in journalism, media, teaching, healthcare, ICT: church ministry, chaplaincy and local government.

Course details
Students will explore a wide range of ethical and religious issues during this course. The course will also promote the moral, spiritual, physical and cultural development of each pupil. It will also give them an opportunity to learn about their wider community.

Course content
The course is studied in year 12 (level 1) and continued in year 13 (level 2). The course consists of 30hrs of study which is one 50min lesson a week and 8 learning assessments need to be completed each year. There is no exam for this course

Year 12 & 13
Students will explore ethical and religious matters in regards to modern advances in technology, changes in attitudes towards religion and their own spirituality.

Assessments must be completed in the following areas

Understand what it means to be spiritual, ethical and have a theology in today’s world
Reflect on their own spiritual and ethical perspective on a current issue in society
Understanding the demands of religious commitments in a modern world
Investigate the religious practices of a religion different to their own
Compare three different religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam)
Understand the difficulties of living a life of faith in society today
Reflect on their own experiences in relation to ethical dilemmas faced by people today

They will start with a basic foundation in year 12 moving on to more advanced understanding in year 13. Students will use a range of skills that will be valuable during their time in the sixth form and beyond. The course offers the students the forum to express their views in a safe environment on the issues affecting someone of faith today. The course is heavily influenced by current affairs that students will be aware of.

The course offers students to work in a variety of different ways, for example, group and individual work, developing presentations to teach others, producing displays and project work.

General RE is a mandatory course for all students in the Sixth Form and completing of the course will result in a qualification.
