Course aims
The course promotes understanding and study in greater detail of the contemporary society, cultural background, literature and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied. French will be used to analyse, hypothesise, evaluate, justify and develop arguments and present viewpoints in both speech and writing.
Course content
Reading and listening material is firmly rooted in the culture of the French speaking world. Topics covered include Environment and pollution, politics and citizenship, protest organisations and charities, customs and religions, EU and world problems. ICT is to be used for research and presentation. Students will be expected to write summaries, free compositions and presentations of information drawn from visual and statistical sources, literary and topic essays and do translations.
Commitment
As with the AS language course, this is a one year course of five timetabled lessons per week. In addition, there are a further two or three lessons arranged in the student's own study time. These are used for individual and group conversation practice with a French assistant and for listening to tapes and watching video material in French.
To follow an A Level language course successfully students must be willing to spend the necessary time to develop all their skills.
