French (AS and A2 )

Course aims
The aim of the course is to develop the ability to use French actively to express ideas and opinions in discussion and in writing as well as for practical communication. It also encourages an interest in all aspects of French culture and attitudes.

Students wishing to have a vocational emphasis in their language learning will find this is in the AS course.

Course content
Competence is developed in the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. This is done through the study of current and cultural themes and topics relevant to young adults, e.g. food, diet, health, transport, travel, tourism, current affairs, media, family, relationships, youth issues, social issues, law, leisure the arts, education and employment, business and industry, ICT. New grammar is introduced within the thematic context.

Commitment
A one year course of five timetabled lessons per week. In addition, there are a further two lessons arranged in the student's own study time. These are used for individual and group conversation practice with a French assistant and for listening to tapes and watching video material in French.

To follow an AS Level language course successfully students must be willing to spend the necessary time to develop all their skills. Regular homework is given and students will be expected to complete a wide variety of tasks, such as research and preparation for oral and follow-up for topic work, using a variety of authentic sources including the internet, and writing short articles, summaries and essays on current events.

There will be a period of study / work experience in the relevant country.
