RE Department

Welcome to the Religious Education Department

The Convent of Jesus and Mary Religious Education Department is at the heart of the school, contributing to the Spiritual and Moral development of students. Religious Education is taught at all Key Stages and accounts for 10% of curriculum time for Key Stage 3 and 4. In the sixth form students follow a General RE programme where contemporary issues relating to faith are covered. Students have benefited from a recent change at GCSE, where exams are taken in Year 10 and 11. This has resulted in an increase in GCSE pass rate. The success of the Department is also reflected in the high take up at A level. Last year 30 students took AS Theology and this year, 19 are taking the course.

Scheme of Work

Key Stage 3 (Yr7 – 9)

The department follows the Bishops of England and Wales recommendation, following the series “The Way. The Truth and The Life’ throughout KS3.

Classes are taught in groups of 30/32 and have three 50-minute lessons a week. At Key stage 3 the Catholic programme The Way, the Truth and the Life is followed and each student has a textbook. At the end of each half term students complete an end of unit test for which they receive a Level.

Homework is set twice a week at Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11)

All classes are taught in their tutor groups and every student is entered for Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies. At the end of Year 10 one GCSE exam is taken and the other is taken in Year 11. In Year 10 students study Mark’s Gospel and in Year 11 they study issues based on Catholic Christianity.

Homework is set twice a week at Key Stage 4.

Revision lessons are given in preparation for the mock and summer exams.

GCSE

All students are entered for GCSE Religious Studies. At GCSE students follow the Edexcel modular course; Unit 3 and Unit 16 are taken.
Unit 16 is an exam based on Mark’s Gospel and is taken at the end of year 10.
Unit 3 is an exam based on Catholic Christianity and is taken at the end of year 11.
Each module is worth 50% of the over all GCSE grade.
