Welcome to the Mentoring Department

The Learning Mentoring Department at CJMLC has form an integral part of the support system available to students. The support offered by the Learning Mentoring Programme will seek to address and aid students to remove barriers of learning. The programme delivers through the provision of both one to one and group mentoring sessions.

The programmes will aim to empower students by raising levels of self-esteem and self-awareness in order to prepare them for opportunities, responsibilities and experience in both school and their adult life.

Expectations

Equipment

  • Every lesson you will need to bring the following:

  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Any work you need support with.

Presentation

It is expected that students write a title, the date and c/w (for class work) at the top of every piece of work.  All titles should be underlined with a ruler. 

Overview of the Mentoring Department at the Convent

Aims of the programme

  • To identify and work towards removing barriers to learning.
  • To enable students to recognise and aim to achieve their full potential.
  • To liaise with external agencies as additional support for students on the programme.
  • To support the aims and objectives of the School Improvement Plan.

 Objectives of the programme

  • To identify and target students who would benefit from the support of a Learning Mentor.
  • To remove barriers to learning through the provision of support and guidance.
  • To set appropriate and achievable targets for individuals.
  • To monitor and evaluate pupils performance and progress.
  • To work closely with staff to ensure the specific needs of each student are met.    

Types of Activities

  • One to one sessions
  • Group work- Equip For Life-Problem solving skills, Helpful Thought- exploring positive and negative responses and their consequences.
  • Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)-exploring the influence of thought processing on ones actions-rational and irrational thoughts.
  • Locus of Control-teaching a sense of responsibility: by taking responsibility for you actions you can determine the consequences.
  • Study skills profile-exploring motivation, organisational skills, exam techniques and study habits.
  • Goals setting-long term and short term.

 

In class support

Support is delivered in class mainly, with some occasional small group withdrawal when needed based on the days lesson withdrawal occurs from. Girls are helped with coursework and organisational skills

Homework club

For an hour after school each day help and support with homework is offered in room 221. This is led by the Mentoring Department.

EXCELLENT 2011 GCSE RESULTS

We have returned to celebrate yet another successful set of exam results with 85% of our girls at KS4 achieving 5 or more A*-C grades, exceeding all targets set.
