Catholic Ethos & the Values of St Claudine

Since 1888 the Convent of Jesus & Mary Language College has benefited from a strong Catholic ethos which lies at the heart of everything we do. The school was founded in 1888 by a small group of French nuns who had come to England in 1860, inspired by the values of their foundress, St Claudine Thévenet (Mother Mary St Ignatius): service, education, forgiveness, family spirit, simplicity and love of Jesus.

St Claudine’s vision was to provide an exceptional education for girls. Inspired by that vision, we have always taught our students to strive to live out Gospel values. Community work and support for several charities gives the girls a sense of the importance of helping those less fortunate than themselves.

Our Chaplaincy team, comprised of a full-time Chaplain and a Liturgical Coordinator, works hard to organise liturgical celebrations, spiritual retreats and to be always on hand for students and staff for prayer and counsel in times of trouble or bereavement.

We continue to follow in St Claudine’s footsteps, remembering her courage and hard work, and her trust in the goodness of God. We thank God for the many Sisters of Jesus & Mary who left family and often country to work in this school and build the future of generations of girls in this area.

The vision of St Claudine and of the Sisters of Jesus & Mary still inspire this school. This is why we honour her and why all our prayers every day still end with the phrase:
